Turtle Rock RV Resort strikes it rich for Fido

The southern Oregon town of Gold Beach counts the Turtle Rock RV Resort as one of its many hidden treasures. The resort is so Fido-friendly that owners Kachina and Julian Starr have coined their own term for the philosophy: K-9 compatible. Kachina says, “We strive to be as K-9 compatible as possible because we really like dogs.” The Starr’s two boxers, Pele and Maseka, will also show their love for visiting K-9s during the days that they are working in the resort’s office.

The Turtle Rock RV Resort’s website boasts an impressive bullet-point list of amenities, and for sand- and surf-seeking Fidos, the first one is of utmost importance: unrestricted ocean access. As lots of traveling dogs know, many times a pristine beach ripe for romping on is flanked with “no dogs allowed” signs, dashing all Fido’s dreams of chasing waves. Not so with Gold Beach, which is just a short walk from the resort and has miles upon miles of Fido-friendly shoreline. And it’s sunny shoreline, to boot. Gold Beach has more sunny days than San Francisco or Vancouver and is known for its atypical coastal weather.

Aprivate beach at Hunter Creek is the perfect place to watch otters play, and some of the RV sites are located right on the creek. Other locations to choose from include forested or shaded sites; all are full hookup sites. Other amenities include an onsite masseuse, complimentary WiFi, kayak rentals and a store. There are several “designated dog deposit” areas around the 24-acre resort, and they all have free pick-up bags. Fido-friendly cottages with private hot tubs are also available for rent at the resort for those who want to enjoy all these amenities but don’t have an RV. Among some of the activities that guests partake in seasonally are whale watching, clamming, crabbing and kayaking.

The Starrs can also help arrange for a day of pet-sitting at the Pet Pals doggy day care. Fido is sure to enjoy a day with owner Sandy Jo, who operates the doggy day care out of her home in Gold Beach. And if Fido behaves during his visit, a trip to Woof’s Dog Bakery will be in order. Owners Buck and Tracie can offer a consultation on a nutritious and holistic diet for Fido, and he’ll get his photo taken and added to their “Wall of Fame”—not to mention a taste of fresh baked goodies while shopping for a new, fashionable collar or comfy bed.

Refreshing natural beauty, wild blackberries and mint, strolls along the beach and soothing sunsets are unavoidable at the Turtle Rock RV Resort. This is a resort to remember, especially because Fido will be welcomed and loved here as he should be everywhere.
