Southern California Dreaming

Five seaside properties where Fido reigns supreme.

By publisher, Susan Sims

Southern California boasts a variety of Fido-welcoming communities on and off-leash with parks, beaches and tiny hamlets begging for the playful side of both you and your canine companion to come out and play.

Location: Oceanside
STAY: Beachfront Only Vacation Rentals

Do you like the sound of crashing waves? Your own private beachfront porch with lounging options of Adirondack chairs? Beachfront Only Vacation Rentals gives you and Fido VIP front beach access to unobstructed views of the Pacific Ocean. With a full kitchen, refrigerator, family board games, Beachfront Only Vacation Rentals provides your own private respite from other beach seeking vacationers.

If you can pull yourself away from your private sanctuary, head downtown with Fido and check out modern art at the Oceanside Museum of Modern Art. Fido is not allowed inside the museum but there are dog-sitting options available (see sidebar). After you have your art fill, you and Fido might want to stop in at the Sanctuary Café for an oasis within an oasis. Attached to one of the oldest buildings in Oceanside, the Sanctuary Café has a new ambiance with cool vibes, plants galore, and some chill coffee and pastry.

After your morning chat with locals, head to the pier to rent a beach cruiser from Wheel Fun Rentals and cruise your way to the marina where it’s SUP (Stand Up Paddleboard) time at SUP Rentals, Boat Rental of America, at Oceanside Harbor. Fido is welcome, and you can choose SUP, Kayak, or paddle boats. Make sure everyone has their lifejackets on, and Fido is able to stay stable while you paddle the marina.
