5 Tips for Pet Halloween Safety

Important Halloween Reminders for FIDO and Fluffy!

Halloween traditions can be fun for humans, but unfamiliar costumes, ringing doorbells and bowls of candy left unattended can cause some major problems for our pets. Embrace Pet Insurance, a top-rated insurance provider for dogs and cats in the U.S., is sharing 5 top tips to help owners keep their pets safe this spooky season.

Tips to Keep Pets Safe During Halloween

  1. Keep candy and wrappers away from pets. Common ingredients like chocolate, xylitol (a sugar substitute), raisins, coffee and macadamia nuts are toxic to pets. In addition to the ingredients, small, plastic wrappers can look like a fun new toy for pets, but they can cause major problems if they are ingested.
  2. If you are wearing a costume, particularly a mask, it is possible that your pet won’t recognize you, which may cause stress. If you will be hosting a party or taking them trick-or-treating, introduce yourself in your costume in the days leading up to it so they have time to adjust.
  3. Some pet parents like to dress their furry friends up in their own costumes, and while this can be good for a laugh, it is important to make sure their own costumes don’t cause them stress. Make sure their costume fits well and isn’t too heavy.
  4. The constant opening and closing of the door for trick-or-treaters raises the chances of pets escaping. Whether it’s having them on a leash or putting them in a different room, have a plan to keep them away from the door.
  5. Common Halloween decorations like cotton spiderwebs; fake, silicon body parts; and garland are fun decorations for setting a spooky mood in your home, but if they are mistaken as a toy and ingested, they can wreak havoc on pets’ intestines. The Mum plant, a fall décor staple, is also toxic to pets. These items should be carefully added in places that will be hard for pets to reach or avoided in homes where pets live.
