All Paws lead to Carlsbad

Traveling with my dog Honey is a bit like touring with a tiny celebrity. She’s outgoing, curious, and convinced every new place exists primarily for her enjoyment. Carlsbad, California did nothing to correct that assumption. From the salty breeze to the sandy sidewalks, this coastal town rolls out the welcome mat for dogs and the humans lucky enough to tag along.
We checked in at Cape Rey Carlsbad Beach, where the vibe is relaxed coastal chic and dogs are clearly part of the plan. Honey was greeted like a returning regular, not a first timer, and the real delight came when I discovered the doggie menu. Yes, an actual menu. While I sipped something cold and citrusy, Honey enjoyed her own chef-approved treat, tail wagging like she’d just won the lottery. Cape Rey’s location makes morning walks a dream. A few steps and you’re breathing ocean air, watching surfers, and letting your dog investigate every interesting scent the Pacific has shipped ashore.

Our second stay was at The Cassara Carlsbad, Tapestry Collection by Hilton, perched above the coastline with sweeping views and a polished yet playful atmosphere. Again, dogs are not an afterthought here. Honey strutted through the lobby like she owned stock in the place. The grounds are perfect for leisurely strolls, and the staff seemed genuinely delighted to see her pop up around corners. Traveling feels lighter when your dog is not just allowed, but celebrated.
Carlsbad itself is a wonderland for paws on the move. We explored dog parks where Honey made instant friends and demonstrated her signature move, the joyful full-body wiggle. Hiking trails wind through coastal terrain and gentle hills, offering just enough challenge to feel adventurous without exhausting either of us. Everywhere we went, water bowls appeared, smiles followed, and no one batted an eye at a muddy paw print or two.
Food is where Carlsbad truly shines, especially if you believe dogs deserve good dining experiences too. Lunch at Seasons Restaurant at the Four Seasons Residence Club Aviara was a standout. As Honey settled at my feet on a dog bed provided by the restaurant along with water bowl, the chef surprised us both by bringing out a special dish made just for her. Watching my dog enjoy a restaurant-crafted meal while I enjoyed my own felt like peak travel luxury. Honey agreed, judging by the way she licked the bowl with theatrical dedication.
For something sweeter, we wandered into The Goods, home of the best donuts in town. These are not modest donuts. These are monster donuts. Fido is allowed inside, which meant Honey could stand proudly beside me while I sipped coffee and debated flavors. She supervised closely, just in case.

After all the walking, hiking, sniffing, and socializing, Honey earned some self-serve bath time at Carlsbad Pet & Feed. She went in sandy and tired and came out fluffy, relaxed, and smelling like a rose. I swear she walked a little taller afterward.

Carlsbad makes traveling with a dog feel effortless and joyful. It’s a place where adventures are shared, meals are inclusive, and dogs are treated like the important companions they are. Honey would go back tomorrow. I would too.
