COVID-19 Crisis Response Info For Pets
March 17, 2020 • At Home • Health & Wellness
Our pets are a source of love, comfort and companionship especially in these times of social distancing, closures and cancellations. Please know that we are here to help you and your pets get through this crisis together.
We want to reassure you that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the World Organisation for Animal Health have issued advisories saying there is no evidence at this time that companion animals can spread the COVID-19 virus.
To help you care for your pets during this crisis, we've put together an FAQ page to answer your questions.
Here are some quick actions you can take to keep your pets safe and secure in the event of additional disruptions:
- Identify a family member or friend who can care for pets if someone in the household becomes too ill.
- Have crates, food and extra supplies (including medications) on hand for movement and relocation of pets.
- Maintain proper pet identification: a collar with an ID tag and a microchip with current, up-to-date contact information.
The Humane Society of the United State is also working to address the effects of this crisis. We've assembled a toolkit for animal shelters to help them respond to the needs of the communities that they serve and are communicating with our Shelter and Rescue Partners to share information.
If you are in a position to do so, consider fostering a pet for your local shelter or rescue, or adopting. Many are anticipating staffing shortages and every animal they can place makes a huge difference.
