Dog Attacked By Dog Ready For a New Family
March 13, 2013 • Rescue
UPDATE !! FIDO just received an update that "K.C." is going to be adopted!
Her new "people" met K.C. today. They filled out an adoption application and took part in an adoption interview with RCHS Shelter Manager Libby Kovalcik. After the interview the potential adopter went home, then returned with her other dog so it could meet K.C. in a neutral setting. (They had adopted their other dog from RCHS two years ago.)
The meeting went well. The adopter will be returning to Rancho Coastal Humane Society on Friday to "cross the I's and dot the T's" then take KC home.
Our friends at VCA - Bonita need help in covering the costs associated with K.C.'s surgery and two weeks of medical care. They went above and beyond to help save this life. If you would like to donate to help pay K.C.'s medical bills call VCA Animal Hospital - Bonita at 619-427-2233

Encinitas, CA -- When "K.C." was attacked in her home by a larger dog her owners rushed her to VCA Animal Hospital on Bonita Road in Chula Vista, not expecting her to survive. But a wagging tail and quick action by VCA staff saved the life of the two year old, 13 pound, Miniature Pinscher mix. Now K.C. will become available for adoption at Rancho Coastal Humane Society in Encinitas and VCA is asking for help to pay medical costs.
"K.C. was in serious condition when she arrived," says VCA - Bonita hospital manager Nichole Jackson. "Her family had prepared themselves for bad news. But even though she had wounds to throat, and her abdomen had been torn open, K.C. still wagged her tail each time we touched her. Rather than have her put down, the family agreed to turn her over to our staff."
Jackson says it was easy to see the severity of the attack on K.C. "Dr. Ted Townsend performed surgery to repair the damage to the dog's throat. He also repaired several holes in her intestines. Accepting responsibility for a dog, particularly a dog that did not appear to have much chance of survival, is not standard practice at any veterinary hospital. K.C.'s wagging tail saved her life."
K.C. is scheduled to be transported from VCA - Bonita to Rancho Coastal Humane Society in Encinitas on Wednesday. RCHS Medical Director Kathy Zerkle has been in contact with VCA and Dr. Townsend since the beginning. "We agreed that, if K.C. survived, RCHS would welcome her into our adoption program and we would find her a new home."
Zerkle believes that K.C. can go on to live a normal life, in spite of the attack. "She's eating and walking with no problems. During her recovery she's even managed to jump up and sleep on the bed with her foster care providers. And, yes, her tail still wags every time you touch her."
RCHS officials are looking for a home where K.C. will have time to settle in and continue her recovery. Zerkle adds, "K.C. nearly lost her life. Now she needs a family that will give her a lifelong commitment. And no matter how much you give her, she'll give you more."
