FIDO is proud to share this information about the Heigl Foundation’s transport program and how it saves dogs’ lives - they are so worthy of this wonderful grant!
Los Angeles, CA ---The Jason Debus Heigl Foundation is honored to have been awarded a $38,500 grant from the ASPCA that will help to fund their small dog transport program.
“Adoptable dogs are being killed daily in Los Angeles, by no fault other than having been born in the wrong place,” said Nancy Heigl, Founder and President. “Since the inception of the Foundation, we have been transporting dogs from high kill shelters in Los Angeles to no/low kill shelters elsewhere in the US. Through this generous grant from the ASPCA, we will be able to expand our programming and save more lives.”
“Sometimes, the difference between life and death for a dog is as simple as a ride,” said Kelli Harmon, manager of animal relocation at the ASPCA. “The ASPCA is a major supporter of transport programs, and we are happy to provide this grant to the Jason Debus Heigl Foundation so that they may continue their life-saving efforts.”
This grant from the ASPCA will support the transport of dogs, primarily under 10 lbs, who would be killed in LA shelters but who are in short supply elsewhere. One unique aspect of this transport program is that after selection, the dogs are protected by the JDHF and will not be euthanized for any reason other than extreme illness. So far in 2013, 597 dogs have been transported to safety and in 2012, 768 dogs were saved through this program alone.

The Jason Debus Heigl Foundation was launched in 2008 by Nancy and Katherine Heigl in loving memory of their son and brother, Jason, who passed away at the age of 15. Jason loved animals. The Foundation extends his legacy of compassion and care by funding efforts to end the euthanizing of 10,000 pets a day and improving their lives through a variety of programs, from funding spay/neuter surgeries to assisting rescue organizations and including transportation.
