Meet Frankie Scholomo – A Perfect Pit Bull Role Model

by: Jenn Kaliser

Frankie was abandoned at the SAVE Animal shelter in Princeton, NJ on October 16, 2010. The staff came in that morning at 8am and found a dog cowering in the corner of an outdoor pen.

He had no fur, swollen paws, swollen ears… swollen everything! One staffer thought that he had been lit on fire! My boyfriend and I met Frankie that morning. He smelled from the bacteria all over his skin, and he had fleas. Once he had his flea bath, we sat outside with him for hours. All this sad little boy wanted to do was cuddle!

We immediately fell in love with this sweet pit bull – abandoned with a severe case of Demodex mange and fear of loud noises, strange sounds, etc. We started fostering him on weekends to help him socialize, and eventually took him on our family trip for Thanksgiving. We adopted him as soon as we came home!

Frankie started teaching Pit Bull Awareness and Humane education classes to children in NJ. His recently published children’s book is used in these classes, and we are hoping it can be used elsewhere as well. As the book includes many photographs of Frankie, the kids see that Frankie is real! A real dog, doing real dog things… loving, caring, playing with toys, taking baths….. Frankie sits in the classroom while his book is being read, and while the lesson is taught. Every child gets a chance to meet Frankie one-on-one. More than a few previously scared children have left class in love with Frankie! (His book can be found at www.lulu.com/spotlight/frankiesworld and a donation is made to SAVE for every copy sold.)

Frankie was also recently highlighted in a recent online article (EXAMINER FRANKIE). It talks about his humane education work, but also his volunteerism. Frankie leads a “playgroup” at the shelter that took care of him where he regularly plays with a group of 4 or 5 dogs – helping them learn to play with others. He also attends events with the shelter – wearing his SAVE T-Shirt, and bringing attention to the shelter, and teaching people that Pit Bulls do not deserve their bad reputation.

Recently Frankie was highlighted as the “Stubby Dog Project Dog of the Week” (Frankie: From Abandoned to Ambassador).

Frankie has a blog (www. lifethroughfrankieseyes.blogspot.com) and a FB Fan page (https://www.facebook.com/pages/Frankie-Schlomo-aka-Frankie-P-Bullie/206910849332954). He does everything he can to help raise awareness and fight the stereotype!

Pit Bull fighting rings and abuse cases seem to be on the rise of late. We hope that Frankie can help raise enough awareness that pit bulls are pets – not fighters – and that something needs to be done to stop the abuse, the fighting, and the BSL.
