National Survey: 74% of Dog Owners Let their Dog Sleep on the Bed

Americans love their pets - in fact, 74% of Americans let their pets sleep on the bed or couch according to a new national survey out today from Stonyfield Organic yogurt. But get this, 77% of dog owners rarely or never wash their dog’s paws after coming in from a walk/outdoors, which means these furry friends track dirt and harmful chemicals and pesticides inside the home.

National Spoil Your Pet Day (Aug. 10) is a great reason to be more mindful about the public parks and our own backyards where dogs play - most of which are treated with harmful chemicals like glyphosate, the active ingredient in RoundUp. Dogs have a 70% higher risk of canine lymphoma cancer after herbicide-treated lawn exposure than dogs not exposed and during the summer, many dogs are falling ill after taking a swim in water where toxic algae blooms are present (fertilizer runoff is a main culprit).

As we think about spoiling our pets with love and treats, here’s some additional stats from the survey:

·         58% of pet parents were not aware that public parks are using pesticides to treat the grass where their pups run and play

·         64% of respondents say they spent more time in their backyards/outdoors or took more walks with their dogs during quarantine; 44% of dog owners took their dog to a public park or field weekly during quarantine

Stonyfield Organic, the country’s leading organic yogurt maker, is on a mission to bring pesticide-free, organic maintenance to as many parks and backyards as possible with its announcement of the latest phase of its #PlayFreeinitiative to stop the use of harmful pesticides on the country’s green spaces in an effort to keep all families – and furry friends – safe. Read more about the initiative in Stonyfield’s press release.
