Pukka’s Promise: The Quest for Longer-Lived Dogs

FIDO couldn't wait to share this book with you!  Pukka’s Promise: The Quest for Longer-Lived Dogs (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, February 2013) by bestselling author Ted Kerasote.

“In Pukka’s Promise, Kerasote travels the dog world in Europe and throughout North America interviewing breeders, veterinarians, and leaders of the animal-welfare movement, and uses cutting-edge research to help dog owners rethink the everyday choices they make for their pets. Kerasote explains in detail how our own lifestyles intimately affect the longevity of our dogs.”

You do not have to read Merle’s Door prior to Pukka’s Promise in order to understand author Ted Kerasote’s love for his dog Pukka as page after page oozes with that love and quest to enjoy Pukka’s friendship for as long as possible. But I highly recommend you do read Merle’s Door at some point, as I am a big fan of both and was captured by Kerasote’s ability to tell his story and wrap my heart in to every word.

I also highly recommend the companion photo essay Pukka, the Pup After Merle. I enjoyed referencing the cute color photos with excerpts in the book so I could see what Pukka looked like along with his various friends and places of interest.

Living outside of Jackson Hole, Wyoming, the seasons and landscape where Kerasote and Pukka live are brought to life with Pukka the star of the show. Neighbors and dogs add to the storyline with several guest dogs enjoying the open doggie door policy at Kerasote’s home along with a Bison bone or two thrown in for good measure.

Pukka’s Promise: The Quest for Longer-Lived Dogs is filled with substantial research to help pet owner’s decide what is best for their own dogs and I have to admit, I placed sticky notes on those pages to return and read later as I was so caught up in Pukka’s adventures and the story telling style of Kerasote, I was anxious to read what happened next.

This enlightened tale of Pukka from puppy to skiing companion will leave you begging for more!
