Despite warnings of hurricane inspired waves along the southern California coast, the 9th Annual Surf Dog Surf-A-Thon took place with all paws on their surf boards Sunday, Sept. 7th.

8-year-old English Bull Dog Dozer took the honors again following his win in last year’s competition as best overall canine surfer up against a doggy lineup of 80 4-legged howling surfers.

“Dozer has surfing in his DNA,” exclaimed his co-owner, Doug Hokstad. Asked by a reporter what Dozer’s training is like, he smiled and said “a lot of sleeping, a lot of eating, and a lot of surfing.”

But it’s really about having a lot of fun out on the waves, added Dozer’s co-owner, Gigi Bagaporo. “When he’s out there he just smiles,” she said. “He’s always out there having a good time.”

And, she added, “It’s all for a good cause, the Helen Woodward Animal Center. Dozer wants to help all his furry friends out there and give them the support they need.”

Helen Woodward Animal Center’s canine surf contest is the largest of its kind in the country and will feature more than 80 dogs surfing in four different weight class competitions.   Winners are selected based upon their ability to ride the waves, have fun and stay on their boards.  Keeping their eyes on the prize, “Top Surf Dog 2014”- hopefuls will compete for the coveted title, judged by celebrities, surf pros and aficionados.
