Tamar Geller’s 30 Days To A Well-Mannered Dog guest review

by: Kelly Ladouceur, KLAD Cockers

As any dog owner knows, bookstore shelves are practically overflowing with books about dog training.  Celebrities, trainers and everybody in between seem to have written a book on how to train your dog.  But how is a person to know which books are genuine, written with expertise and love?  Easy!  Read the FIDO Friendly blog for book reviews.

In October 2010 I was invited to read Tamar Geller’s latest book, 30 Days To A Well-Mannered Dog: The Loved DogTM Method.  I jumped at the opportunity, not having read Tamar’s first book, but having seen the positive hype surrounding it.  As an avid reader as well as a dog trainer, this kind of book appeals to me and I dove in eagerly.

The book is very well-written.  Tamar writes in a down-to-earth tone, without making the reader feel as though anything is being dumbed down.  She talks about the popular dominance myth that persists among dog owners, and she illustrates why it’s not the perfect fit for our family dogs as once was thought.  She talks about instinct vs. choice, and how to encourage our dogs to choose to behave in the correct manner, instead of insisting that they do so.

The book starts off with theory and general knowledge, while the second half of the book goes through Tamar’s 30 day plan to living with a well-mannered dog.  She addresses both puppies and new-to-you adult dogs, and how to adapt the methods for both groups.  She discusses commonly-asked questions, and provides methods for dealing with the most prevalent behavior complaints among dog owners.

Tamar’s method is non-violent and non-confrontational, which allows you to build a more solid and loving relationship with your dog.  At the same time, she is not permissive – she doesn’t allow the dogs to walk all over her either.

This books is perfect for the new dog owner or a dog owner just wanting to know how to build a better relationship with their furry friend.  It would make a great gift for family or friends that need some help with their dog, but be forewarned that once you peek inside the front cover, you may not want to give it away!
