The Pet Plan and Pet Trust Guide: Book review

Some topics we don’t like to think about but they must be talked about. Even better, when someone else talks about them and shares the legalese and must-knows about said topics, we here at FIDO Friendly magazine gravitate to these books.

What would happen to your dog(s) if something happened to you? What if you travel and go away for a day, a week, or as we all shall pass, forever?

Kimberly A. Colgate, scholar and author with 30 years’ experience, approaches this topic in detail along with illustrator Debby Carman in the book, The Pet Plan and Trust Guide. The guide comes complete with a fill-in-the-blank pet trust form and is a step-by-step what to know, what to do, and how to go about getting this important info accomplished.

Aesthetically, the lighthearted artwork in the book lessens the weight of this serious topic. Personally, this made it easier for me to read and didn’t feel like homework. So just what kind of legal documents would protect your pets? Is it enough to just tell someone you trust to watch after Fido in the event of your passing? In a nutshell, no. Three ways you can provide for your pets after you are gone include a will, a trust and an agreement. With each having their advantages and disadvantages, the author delves into details of each.

Did you know a will alone is not enough to protect your pets? Page 32 shares why and what you do need. As the accompanying illustration depicts, a dog is seen saying to its owner, “Thank goodness they know how to take care of us.” As someone who has a will in place with her dog named in it, I was very misinformed and misguided in my dog’s well being until I read this book.

How to choose a caregiver? Should it really be the person you think it should be or maybe reconsider? The author outlines questions to ask yourself as you choose the caregiver(s) who would take over Fido’s care should you pass. Do you have funds in place? Specific directives of care? All of this is outlined in the book.

Chapter Nine is an actual revocable pet trust, in a very simple fashion. For each line you fill out, the author directs you to the pages that correspond to ensure you are doing it correctly.

With Fido’s well being on the line, this book is truly a no brainer, a must have, and very simply yet intelligently explained. Kudos to the author and illustrator on a powerhouse of legal information every dog owner should have.
