TropiClean dental products for dogs: Product review
November 24, 2010 • Product Reviews
I brush my dog’s teeth every night before bed. I brush my own, then I brush Dexter’s. I did the same thing to my last cocker spaniel for the nearly 15 years of her life. Dental care is pivotal for dogs. In fact, the American Veterinary Dental Society claims that 80 percent of dogs and 70 percent of cats show signs of oral disease by age 3.
Are you brushing Fido’s teeth daily? Have a busy life and it’s a bit too time consuming? How cool would it be to have product that not only is easy to use but requires little to no effort from Fido’s owner?
The TropiClean company has a line of oral care products for pets claiming to give Fido “’fresh breath and clean teeth’ without brushing.” As a daily brusher, I was very eager to test this line and see how minty fresh and tummy-kind this line of dental products would be.
We opted to try the mint foam in a 4.5 ounce bottle. The instant foam works as it claims: instantly! If you’ve never brushed Fido’s teeth before, please have a veterinarian examine their teeth and gums before starting any dental regimen. For me, this was simple. Gently pull Fido’s jowls back and pump twice on each side of the mouth. That’s it. No food, treats or water for 30 minutes before or after. Dexter didn’t mind and went about his merry way.
We also tried the low-fat, low-calorie fresh breath treats. Made with natural mint, dill and parsley, I thought perhaps Dexter would bolt the other way was sniffing these treats (after all, they are good for him, right)? Not so. In fact, I used them inside his Kong Genius toy and engaged his senses. We like these an addition to an already-established doggy dental routine. His tummy, which is sensitive, took well to these. No problems with any of the products.
Since oral pain and infection may not be immediately noticeable to dog owners, it’s important to pay attention to Fido’s gums, teeth and allow your vet to inspect them at least yearly (more for older dogs). For routine maintenance, TropiClean also has an oral care water additive and a clean gel kit available.
Will I forgo my doggy toothbrush and toothpaste to solely use these products? No, but I will use them in conjunction with my established routine and recommend the line highly. Fido’s doggy breath and dental care are in your hands; add a kit from TropiClean to his stocking this holiday season.
