Marshall, the Seville-Guilford Firehouse Dog, Embraced in 2021.
The experts from Embrace Pet Insurance shared these insights below.
Pros for Owning a Dalmatian
- Adorable, highly distinctive black and white spots
- Intelligent with a strong desire to please, exceling in canine sports and performing tricks
- High energy with an endless capacity for exercise, making them a great companion for those with active lifestyles
- Love attention from their humans and want to be a part of the family
Dalmatian’s Downsides
- Smooth, dense coats that shed regularly; their hair is stiff, making it difficult to remove from clothing and furniture
- Easily become noisy or destructive if they don’t receive attention from their people or have other dogs to keep them company
Common Health Problems
As a pet insurance company, Embrace has seen it all. Their largest claim for a Dalmatian was for Mia, a now 11-year-old from Chenango Forks, NY, for pancreatitis in 2018. The claim was $18,812, and lucky for Mia’s loving humans, Embrace was able to reimburse them for $14,889.
Mia is a rare case; however, just as people have the potential to inherit a particular disease, dog breeds are no different. Dalmatians are predisposed to genetic deafness and also have a uric acid metabolism that predisposes them to kidney or bladder stones.
The most common claims submitted to Embrace for Dalmatians include:
- Urinary tract infection
- Ear infection
- Allergies
- Cranial cruciate ligament tear
