Big Bear Cool Cabins - What better way to social distance than by staying in a cozy cabin this winter.
By Debbie McGinn
As a Southern Californian, Big Bear is in our backyard. A two-hour drive and we were in town for a nice long three-day weekend.
The check in process at Big Bear Cool Cabins was mindful of social distancing and close to the cabin. The cabin we chose, Cozy Pines Retreat, had a dog door in the kitchen that lead to the spacious backyard which is fenced and included a small bench in the yard and a Weber barbeque grill. The interior was very rustic and clean with a full kitchen including dishes and cooking pans plus a refrigerator and microwave.
Our cozy cabin is perfect for those who spend most of their time outdoors enjoying all the activities like the hiking trails, kayaking, boating, winter skiing and other snow sports. Situated in a quiet neighborhood and a short five-minute drive to Boulder Bay Park located on Big Bear Lake, we were offered free use of one single person kayak and one bike.
Who wants to cook while on vacation? Not me! There were a lot of choices at The Village in Big Bear however, we narrowed it down to Oakside and El Jacalito Grill.
*All restaurants required masks while entering and removing them once seated.
Oakside –We had the best calamari we have ever had, and the portion was so big we didn’t need dinner. It came with their famous Bloody Mary sauce which was flavorful but not spicy. Also had a remoulade sauce lightly topped on the calamari. Very friendly staff. They have a very large downstairs outdoor patio area and welcome dogs where water for dogs is offered.
El Jacalito Grill – They have a large outdoor area and also a high top outdoor eating area that wraps around to the street to watch the shoppers and fun cars travel down the main street. We had chips and two salsas that were fresh homemade and both delicious. One spicy and the other mild. The margarita was served in a huge goblet made with fresh lime juice and Patron tequila that was amazing. They also welcome dogs and restaurant guests were very happy to see dogs come in to dine with their family. We sat on a high top and saw many people walking by with their dogs. Great place to people and dog watch. Staff very busy but friendly. Water for dogs offered.
We also had take-out breakfast from Country Kitchen and enjoyed the best pancakes ever.
Convenience is key when choosing your cabin and ours was just a few miles from the village where you can find a Vons and Stater Brothers and many cute boutiques, clothing and sport shops, restaurants and hotels.
Check out all the cabins online to find the best one suited for your group and that includes Fido!
Boulder Bay Park: Beautiful adjacent pet friendly park and public parking available.
Visit Alpine Pedal Park which is a 3.2 mile nature walk or bike ride and dogs must be on a leash. Bring water for dogs. Great reviews on this trail and most trails we heard about dogs are welcome.
· Bark Park in Big Bear Lake has two areas one for small dogs and the other for larger dogs. They have fun exercise jump overs, a tunnel for dogs to run through. Bathrooms clean on the premises.
