Okay, the San Diego Padres may be occupying the basement in the win-loss column in the West Division of the National League, but on Tuesday, July 27, Petco Park set a world record. Credit plenty of tail-wagging, costume-wearing canines for achieving this feat.
In celebration of the annual Dog Days of Summer event in which well-mannered dogs are permitted to join their people to watch the baseball action, the San Diego Padres and Petco teamed up to try to land in the Guinness World Records book.
The goal: get more than 209 dogs to wear costumes and walk completely around the field inside Petco Park. With Guinness official Freddie Hoff on hand to verify, the parade pack at Petco shattered the old mark easily by totaling 337 dogs!
“It has been an amazing record attempt and I’m happy to say it was successful,” confirmed Hoff. “The 337 dogs in the costume parade was way above the set amount and on behalf of Guinness World Records, I’d like to say congratulations.”
Among the canine celebrities and two-legged personalities participating were skateboard Bulldog phenom Tillman, Chopper the Biker Dog, Hall of Famer Steve Garvey and actress and animal advocate Megan Blake. Arden Moore, editor-at-large of Fido Friendly magazine, captured the historic event and was joined by her cool mutt, Cleo, who delighted the crowd by kissing babies and posing on home plate.
Dogs had the chance to participate in plenty of pre-game “tail” gate party activities before the first pitch, thanks to plenty of vendor booths.
