For many pet owners, vacation plans often get put on the backburner or their length of stay shortened because they have to leave their pets at home. But, as more and more people travel with pets, the options for pet-friendly accommodations are becoming increasingly abundant. So when choosing the right accommodation what should pet owners look for to ensure the best possible experience for themselves and their pets?
• Narrow search around proximity to pet-friendly parks or beaches: when deciding where to stay, zero-in on accommodation options that are in close walking distance to pet-friendly parks and beaches. This will make regular walks and outings with “Fido” a lot more convenient than the need to hop in the car multiple times a day.
• Consider a rental vacation home versus hotel stay: there are a number of beautiful pet-friendly vacation homes available for short-term rental all over the country. Vacation homes are more spacious than standard hotel rooms and some even come fully equipped with pet supplies, dog leashes, etc. to make traveling with pets that much easier.
• Ask about pet deposits and fees upfront: often times, pet-friendly accommodations charge additional fees for staying with pets, such as pet deposits and cleaning fees. Therefore, make sure understand those fees and be aware of all of the options before booking the reservation.
• Make sure to give “Fido” adequate exercise and playtime before lengthy stays in a crate: there are usually times when crating a dog during vacation is necessary, however, make sure he/she has been exercised so crate times can be timed with their rest periods.
• Find pet-friendly restaurants in the area and plan meals in advance: there are more and more restaurants and coffee spots that cater to diners with pets. Look for those places in advance to eliminate having to order takeout every day.
• Read reviews from other travelers with pets who have stayed where you are planning to stay: the best way to find a good pet-friendly accommodation is to read about what others who have stayed there are staying on the Internet.
• Ask for photos or virtual tours of the accommodation: many hotels, rental homes and other pet-friendly accommodations can provide virtual tours and photos of the place. Travelers with pets should ask for them in advance to best ensure that the accommodation will be what they are expecting before actually arriving.
