Roving with Rover: Fidos Love Central Florida in Winter

Guest post by Carrie Boyko of All Things Dog Blog

Winters in Florida are simply delightful. With average daytime temperatures in the 70 degree range, you’re sure to enjoy the temperate climate, no matter where you’re from.  Want to see the highlights without leaving Fido at home? Try this plan on for size.

  • First things first. Find a place to stay that won’t turn Fido away. I got lots of help on this one from my friend Amy at Go Pet Friendly.  She quickly located 77 hotels in the Central Florida area that are pet friendly; you can peruse the list at this link.  Amy’s advice? She suggests checking out their detailed pet policies to determine if there will be additional fees for your pet, learn about weight restrictions, and find out if you’ll be allowed to leave your pet alone in the room. Great tips!
  • While visiting the Disney area parks for the day, your Fido may want to lounge or play at Walt Disney World’s Best Friends’ Pet Care, where he’ll be pampered Disney style. After you review their site and policies, you may want to read an independent review here.
  • If Fido happens to leave anything behind, you’ll both enjoy a visit to Pookie’s Bow Wow Bakery on Fairbanks Avenue in Winter Park, where shopping for Fido is all about natural. This popular shop includes a full bakery and many all natural and organic brands.
  • Central Florida is home to a large number of off-leash dog parks throughout the area, so no matter where you decide to stay there will be a park nearby. You can find a list of these parks, with locations at this post.
  • A visit to the Orlando area is not complete without a leisurely stroll down Park Avenue in Winter Park, just a short drive from Disney. You’ll be sure to see dogs of all shapes and sizes, while enjoying a wide selection of cafes that allow your Fido to dine with you in their open air eating areas along the sidewalks. This is THE place in Central Florida for your Fido to see and BE SEEN!
  • While you’re busy being seen on Park Avenue, don’t miss The Doggie Door, where you’ll find dog and dog lover gifts of all sorts, including an assortment of dog-themed wines from around the world.
  • Don’t miss Paw Park in historic Sanford, voted in the Top 10 America’s dog parks. With misters and a giant fallen tree in the center, you and Fido are sure to enjoy this refreshingly beautiful park. Afterwards, visit Paw Park Place Bakery and Boutique next door for a snack and a quick do-it-yourself bath.
  • Let Fido finish drying off while you walk along the boardwalk of Lake Monroe, just a few blocks north of the Paw Park. This is a great place to enjoy the sundown and perhaps a cocktail at one of the waterfront eateries.
  • Need a night off from Fido? Our favorite stays are Bow Wow Resort (North Orlando area) or University of Doglando (South Orlando area).  As with any travel arrangements, the courtesy of a call ahead could make all go much more smoothly. Enjoy your visit and don’t forget your sunscreen; it’s a must year round.
