“SURFURS” BACK ON BOARD TO PREP FOR THE 2013 SURF DOG SURF-A-THON

This Sat July 20, 2013 FIDO’s friends at the Helen Woodward Animal Center head back to the beach with competition hopefuls:

Rancho Santa Fe, Calif. – Helen Woodward Animal Center dives back into Surf Dog lessons at Dog Beach in Del Mar this Saturday, July 20th.   The popular classes have beach-loving pups learning to hang twenty and “test the waters” for the upcoming 8th Annual Surf Dog Surf-A-thon (held Sunday, September 8th, from 8am to 2pm PT) presented by Helen Woodward Animal Center and Blue Buffalo.  This year, the summertime classes feature expert instruction from legendary leaders of the pack – the So Cal Surf Dogs.  The highly respected club of “SurFur” Dogs and their owners will meet you on the beach the next two Saturdays in a row, July 20th and 27th, for three classes each lesson-day at 10:00am, 11:00am and 12:00noon.

The September-scheduled Surf Dog Surf-A-Thon makes some very big waves each year – attracting the attention of thousands of beach-lovers, dog-lovers, surf-lovers and Cali-lifestyle-lovers throughout the state.  Helen Woodward Animal Center’s canine surf contest is the largest of its kind in the country and will feature more than 80 dogs surfing in four different weight class competitions.   Winners are selected based upon their ability to ride the waves, have fun and stay on their boards.  The top winners from each category are invited back to surf in a final “Best in Surf” at the end of the competition.

Other dog-and-family friendly activities scheduled during the Surf Dog Surf-A-Thon, presented by Helen Woodward Animal Center and Blue Buffalo, will include the Beach Bum Bikini Babe Canine Costume Contest; among others.  All proceeds from the annual competition and festivities will go towards the animals and programs at Helen Woodward Animal Center.

In the meantime, GromMutts-in-training will be tackling the beach to go from “Barney” to “Big Kahuna” and the newly structured classes have tails wagging.  With a limited class size of only 10 canines per session, along with first-hand instruction from the enthusiastic So Cal Surf Dogs and San Diego Pet Training, last month’s classes saw nearly every first-time surFur up and riding within the hour!  All Helen Woodward Animal Center Surf Dog lessons cost $45 per dog (one adult human per dog please), including the required life vests and surf boards.  Each lesson runs about an hour in length.  Registration is now open for all the Doggie Surf Classes, scheduled Saturdays at 10:00am, 11:00am and 12:00noon on July 20th and 27th and August 10th, 17th and 24th.  Dogs who take to the waves are encouraged to register for Helen Woodward Animal Center’s 8th Annual Surf Dog Surf-A-Thon on Sept. 8th, 2013.
