Protecting Fido’s health with a little extra boost.
By Jon Provost
If you ever need it, pet health insurance can be a real lifesaver, but keeping companion dogs safe and healthy is the key. Dogs are great at masking illnesses; it’s that survival thing. So the most important thing is to be diligent about Fido’s health. Having pet insurance is a good thing, but not having to use it is even better.
Here are five tips on keeping Fido healthy with or without health insurance:
- Observe his or her eating habits. If they’ve changed, something could be wrong.
- Watch his or her weight. Is he or she losing or gaining? Obese dogs get diabetes just like humans do, as well as a myriad of weight-related health issues.
- Any change in urine or stool could be an indicator that something is awry.
- Keep current on all recommended vaccinations and tests as well as flea and tick control.
- Keep your dog under control. Dogs running loose can get hit by cars or come into contact with other animals that are ill.
Fido Health Alerts:
- Border collies are prone to losing their eyesight in old age.
- Large breeds commonly develop hip and joint problems.
- Bone fractures occur easily in small breeds.
